Toronto Power Solutions Cogeneration – Etobicoke is a project in development by Toronto Power Solutions, a partnership between Enbridge and Toronto Hydro Energy Services. Toronto Power Solutions is developing a proposal to construct, own and operate a 55 megawatt (MW) cogeneration facility on the Molson brewery site in Toronto, Ontario.

The site encompasses an area of approximately 0.8 hectares and is located at the Molson brewery site on Carlingview Drive, near the junction of Highways 401 and 427. The cogeneration facility will utilize clean natural gas to provide steam to the Molson brewery as well as power to the electricity grid. Connection to the electricity grid will be via the Richview transformer station which is east of the site.

This project is in response to a recently issued request for proposal (RFP) from the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). The OPA is seeking up to 500 megawatts of high-efficiency combined heat and power projects across Ontario, including industrial cogeneration and district energy projects.

The benefits of the project are:
  • Provides 55 MW of clean power to the Toronto area electrical grid, improving system reliability. This is equivalent to supplying electricity to 22,000 homes.
  • Provides competitively priced electricity supply for an otherwise constrained electrical grid.
  • Short-term employment of an estimated 200 construction jobs and long-term employment of 15 full-time highly skilled operating jobs.
  • Keeping industrial jobs in the area will add to Toronto’s tax base and helps to keep Molson competitive.
The project will be subject to an environmental screening process that includes:
  • Examining project’s potential impacts on the environment (land, air, water & noise)
  • Developing suitable measures to mitigate potential impacts
  • Consultations with all affected stakeholders
